right distal ureter

The right distal ureter is the lower portion of the right ureter, running from the common iliac artery bifurcation to the entry point into the posterior wall of the urinary bladder. It is the penultimate segment before the intramural ureter.

The right distal ureter descends through the right side of the pelvic cavity. After crossing the right common iliac artery bifurcation, it follows the lateral pelvic wall and courses medially to connect with the posterolateral wall of the bladder, near the right ureteric orifice.

The right distal ureter transports urine from the mid-ureter into the urinary bladder through sequential peristaltic contractions. Its course through the pelvis places it in close relationship with several pelvic structures, which is an important consideration in pelvic anatomy.

The right distal ureter may be involved in conditions such as ureteral calculi, strictures, or external compression from pelvic masses. It is also at risk of injury during certain pelvic surgical procedures. Medical evaluation is required to assess any suspected condition.

Imaging modalities such as CT urography, pelvic ultrasound, or intravenous pyelography are used to evaluate the right distal ureter. Ureteroscopy may provide direct visualization when indicated. These methods help detect stones, strictures, dilation, or other findings.
