cerebellum
corpus cerebelli
Part of the metencephalon, the cerebellum lies in the posterior cranial fossa behind the brain stem, projecting dorsally between the brain stem and the back of the cerebrum. In humans it is formed of two lateral lobes and a median lobe. Developmentally it derives from the anterior hindbrain and perhaps includes part of the posterior midbrain. Its recorded functions concern the coordination of movement, the control of muscle tone, the coordination of muscles generally, and the maintenance of bodily equilibrium and balance, so it is treated as a motor structure that regulates the execution of movement rather than initiating it. Its Latin designation is corpus cerebelli, and it is classified within the nervous system as a regional part of the brain.
