accessory mandibular lymph node

The accessory mandibular lymph node is a lymph node located in the accessory mandibular region, near the lower jaw. It filters lymph fluid and participates in immune surveillance of the tissues draining to this region of the face and oral cavity.

The accessory mandibular lymph node is situated in the mandibular region of the face and neck, near the lower jaw (mandible). It may lie along the inferior border of the mandible or in the tissue beneath it, adjacent to the main submandibular lymph nodes.

The accessory mandibular lymph node filters lymph draining from the lower face, oral cavity, lips, and lower teeth. It provides immune surveillance for this territory, capturing and presenting antigens to activate immune responses against infection and malignancy.

Dental infections, soft tissue infections of the face and neck, and oral cancers can cause enlargement (lymphadenopathy) of the accessory mandibular lymph nodes. Metastatic spread from oral cavity cancers may involve these nodes, affecting cancer staging and treatment planning.

Submandibular lymph nodes are the principal lymph node group in the submandibular triangle, while accessory mandibular lymph nodes are additional nodes outside the main group in a slightly different position relative to the mandible. Both drain overlapping territories of the oral and facial regions.
