abdominal nerve plexus

abdominal aortic nerve plexus

The abdominal aortic plexus (aortic plexus) is formed by branches derived, on either side, from the celiac plexus and ganglia, and receives filaments from some of the lumbar ganglia. It is situated upon the sides and front of the aorta, between the origins of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. From this plexus arise part of the spermatic, the inferior mesenteric, and the hypogastric plexuses; it also distributes filaments to the inferior vena cava.

Perguntas frequentes

What is the abdominal nerve plexus?
The abdominal nerve plexus (abdominal aortic nerve plexus), also known as the aortic plexus, is a network of autonomic nerve fibers and ganglia situated on the surface of the abdominal aorta. It is formed by branches from the celiac plexus and lumbar ganglia and coordinates the autonomic supply to abdominal organs.
Where is the abdominal nerve plexus located?
The abdominal nerve plexus is located on the sides and front of the abdominal aorta, between the origins of the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries. It forms a meshwork of fibers that extends along the aorta from the celiac axis down to the aortic bifurcation.
What is the function of the abdominal nerve plexus?
The abdominal nerve plexus distributes autonomic signals (both sympathetic and parasympathetic) to the abdominal organs, regulating functions such as gastrointestinal motility, glandular secretion, vascular tone, and visceral pain transmission. It gives rise to the inferior mesenteric, spermatic, and hypogastric plexuses.
What conditions can affect the abdominal nerve plexus?
Celiac plexus block or neurolysis is used to manage refractory pain from pancreatic cancer and other abdominal malignancies. Injury during aortic surgery or from retroperitoneal tumors can disrupt plexus function, causing autonomic dysfunction or chronic pain.
How is the abdominal nerve plexus different from the celiac plexus?
The celiac plexus is a specific, large plexus concentrated around the celiac artery that supplies the upper abdominal organs, while the abdominal nerve plexus refers more broadly to the network along the entire abdominal aorta. The celiac plexus contributes to forming the abdominal nerve plexus, which then gives rise to further subplexuses.
