fourth ventricle

4th ventricle

The fourth ventricle is a single large, irregularly shaped cavity of the ventricular system lying on the midline of the rhombencephalon. Its boundaries are formed ventrally by the medulla, pons, and isthmus, and dorsally by the cerebellum. It is continuous with the cerebral aqueduct anteriorly and with the central canal of the spinal cord posteriorly, so it forms the caudal segment of the internal cerebrospinal fluid pathway. It also communicates with the subarachnoid space through its lateral and median apertures, which is the point at which cerebrospinal fluid leaves the ventricular system for the space around the brain. It is classified as a brain ventricle within the nervous system.

Part of the ventricular system of the brain, forming a single large irregularly shaped cavity located on the midline of the rhombencephalon, between the medulla, pons and the isthmus ventrally and the cerebellum dorsally. It is continuous with the cerebral aqueduct anteriorally and the central canal of the spinal cord posteriorly. It communicates with the subarachnoid space through its lateral and median apertures.
