Peritoneum passing over the rectum and bladder continues across the intestinal surface and fundus of the uterus and onto its vesical surface, covering it as far as the junction of the body and cervix uteri before reflecting onto the bladder. That reflection creates a second and shallower peritoneal recess, the vesicouterine excavation, also called the uterovesical pouch. It is shallower than the rectouterine recess formed behind the uterus, and it lies close to the anterior fornix of the vagina. Classified as a fold of peritoneum rather than an organ, the pouch is defined entirely by the course of the serous membrane between two pelvic viscera, and its Latin name, excavatio vesico-uterina, names the two organs that bound it.
