superior segmental renal artery

The superior segmental renal artery is a branch arising from the anterior division of the renal artery. It passes anterior to the renal pelvis, coursing superiorly and laterally to supply the apical (superior) lobe of the kidney. It is one of the named segmental arteries that provide end-arterial blood supply to distinct zones of renal tissue.

This artery is located within the renal sinus, originating from the anterior division of the renal artery near the renal hilum. It travels anteriorly to the renal pelvis and then ascends steeply toward the superior pole of the kidney, where it distributes within the apical renal lobe.

The superior segmental renal artery is involved in delivering oxygenated blood to the superior (apical) lobe of the kidney. This blood supply supports the glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and other metabolic activities of the nephrons residing in the apical segment of the kidney.

Conditions such as renal artery stenosis, atherosclerosis, thromboembolism, or arteriovenous malformations may be associated with compromise of the superior segmental renal artery. Occlusion of this end-artery may be involved in segmental renal infarction. Anatomical variants of this vessel are also relevant in renal surgery.

The superior segmental renal artery is commonly assessed using CT angiography or renal arteriography, which can delineate its origin, course, and branching pattern. Doppler ultrasound may also be used to evaluate flow. Detailed knowledge of its anatomy is important when planning procedures such as partial nephrectomy or nephron-sparing surgery.
