The sigmoid colon lamina propria is the layer of connective tissue that underlies the epithelial lining of the sigmoid colon. It is a component of the colonic mucosa and provides structural support to the intestinal crypts while housing immune cells and vascular structures.

The sigmoid colon lamina propria is located within the wall of the sigmoid colon, which is the S-shaped segment of the large intestine in the left lower pelvis, just before the rectum. It lies between the surface epithelium and the muscularis mucosae.

The sigmoid colon lamina propria supports the crypt epithelium that absorbs water and electrolytes from fecal material. It contains immune cells — including lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages — that contribute to mucosal immunity and defense against luminal microorganisms.

The sigmoid colon lamina propria may be associated with diverticular disease, where mucosal outpouchings develop through the colonic wall. Inflammatory bowel disease, sigmoid volvulus, and sigmoid colon carcinoma may also involve pathological changes in the lamina propria.

The sigmoid colon lamina propria is commonly examined through biopsies taken during flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. Tissue analysis assesses inflammatory cell patterns, glandular integrity, and any dysplastic changes within the mucosal architecture.
