longus colli muscle

longi colli

The Longus colli muscle is a muscle of the human body. The Longus colli is situated on the anterior surface of the vertebral column, between the atlas and the third thoracic vertebra. It is broad in the middle, narrow and pointed at either end, and consists of three portions, a superior oblique, an inferior oblique, and a vertical. The superior oblique portion arises from the anterior tubercles of the transverse processes of the third, fourth, and fifth cervical vertebræ and, ascending obliquely with a medial inclination, is inserted by a narrow tendon into the tubercle on the anterior arch of the atlas. The inferior oblique portion, the smallest part of the muscle, arises from the front of the bodies of the first two or three thoracic vertebræ; and, ascending obliquely in a lateral direction, is inserted into the anterior tubercles of the transverse processes of the fifth and sixth cervical vertebræ. The vertical portion arises, below, from the front of the bodies of the upper three thoracic and lower three cervical vertebræ, and is inserted into the front of the bodies of the second, third, and fourth cervical vertebræ. 常见问题

What is the longus colli muscle?
The longus colli is a prevertebral muscle of the neck located on the anterior surface of the vertebral column, extending from the atlas (C1) to the third thoracic vertebra (T3). It is the largest and most medial of the prevertebral muscles.
What are the three portions of the longus colli muscle?
The longus colli has three portions: a superior oblique portion (from the anterior tubercles of C3–C5 transverse processes to the anterior tubercle of the atlas), an inferior oblique portion (from the bodies of T1–T3 to the transverse processes of C5–C6), and a vertical portion (from the bodies of T1–T3 and C5–C7 to the bodies of C2–C4).
What is the function of the longus colli muscle?
The longus colli muscle flexes the cervical spine (neck flexion), assists in lateral flexion when contracting unilaterally, and helps stabilize the cervical vertebral column. It is the primary neck flexor working in concert with other prevertebral muscles.
What nerve innervates the longus colli muscle?
The longus colli is innervated by the ventral rami of cervical spinal nerves C2 through C6, with each portion receiving innervation from the segmental levels corresponding to its attachments.
What is the clinical significance of the longus colli muscle?
The longus colli is relevant in anterior cervical spine surgery, where it must be reflected to access the vertebral bodies. Calcific tendinitis of the longus colli can cause acute neck pain and dysphagia (longus colli tendinitis).
