left anterior descending artery

The left anterior descending artery (LAD), also known as the anterior interventricular artery, is a major branch of the left coronary artery. It descends along the anterior interventricular groove and is one of the most significant arteries supplying blood to the heart muscle.

The left anterior descending artery originates from the left main coronary artery and descends along the anterior interventricular groove — the groove on the front surface of the heart between the left and right ventricles — often reaching the apex of the heart.

The left anterior descending artery supplies oxygenated blood to the anterior wall of the left ventricle, the interventricular septum, the apex of the heart, and portions of the right ventricle. Its extensive territory makes it particularly important for cardiac function.

Disease affecting the left anterior descending artery may be associated with reduced blood supply to large portions of the heart muscle. Because of the extent of myocardium it supplies, it is sometimes referred to in cardiology literature in the context of anterior myocardial events. Medical evaluation is essential for any cardiac concern.

The left anterior descending artery is evaluated with coronary CT angiography, conventional invasive coronary angiography, cardiac MRI, or echocardiography to assess blood flow and structural integrity. These studies are performed by specialists in the context of cardiac evaluation.
