filiform papilla

filiform papilla of tongue

The filiform papillae are thin, long 'V'-shaped cones that don't contain taste buds but are the most numerous. These papillae are mechanical and not involved in gustation covering most of the dorsum (upper surface). They are small and arranged in lines parallel to the V-shaped row of circumvallate papillae, except at the tip of the tongue where they are aligned transversely. Projecting from their apices are numerous filamentous processes, or secondary papillae. These are of a whitish tint, owing to the thickness and density of the epithelium of which they are composed. This epithelium has undergone a peculiar modification as the cells have become cornified and elongated into dense, imbricated, brush-like processes. They contain also a number of elastic fibers, which render them firmer and more elastic than the papillae of mucous membrane generally. The larger and longer papillae of this group are sometimes termed papillae conicae. Fungiform papillae are found dispersed throughout the filiform papillae. [WP,unvetted].

常见问题

What are filiform papillae?
Filiform papillae are the most numerous and smallest type of papillae found on the dorsal surface of the tongue. They are thin, elongated, conical projections with a V-shaped tip and do not contain taste buds.
What is the function of filiform papillae?
Filiform papillae serve a primarily mechanical function—they create a rough surface texture on the tongue that aids in manipulating food, rasping food off surfaces (especially in cats), and moving food toward the pharynx during swallowing. They do not contribute to taste perception.
Do filiform papillae contain taste buds?
No, filiform papillae do not contain taste buds. They are covered by a keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and function mechanically rather than chemosensorially, unlike fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate papillae which contain taste buds.
How are filiform papillae arranged on the tongue?
Filiform papillae are arranged in lines or rows parallel to the circumvallate (vallate) papillae, running in a V-pattern pointing toward the back of the tongue. They cover most of the anterior two-thirds of the dorsal tongue surface.
What is the clinical appearance of filiform papillae?
Filiform papillae give the tongue its normal rough, velvety texture. In hairy tongue (lingua villosa), they become elongated and discolored due to poor oral hygiene, antibiotics, or tobacco use. Atrophic glossitis causes smooth, red tongue with loss of filiform papillae.
