The transverse colon lamina propria is the connective tissue layer that underlies the epithelial lining of the transverse colon. It is part of the colonic mucosa and contains intestinal glands, immune cells, blood vessels, and lymphatics that support and protect the mucosal surface.

The transverse colon lamina propria is located within the wall of the transverse colon, which runs horizontally across the upper abdomen between the hepatic and splenic flexures. It lies between the luminal epithelium and the muscularis mucosae in the innermost layer of the colonic wall.

The transverse colon lamina propria supports the colonic crypts and provides a microenvironment for immune cells to monitor luminal contents. It contains plasma cells that produce secretory immunoglobulin A, helping to defend the mucosal surface against bacterial and viral pathogens.

The transverse colon lamina propria may be associated with inflammatory bowel disease, particularly ulcerative colitis, which causes diffuse mucosal inflammation with increased immune cell infiltration. Colonic polyps and carcinoma may also originate in or invade through the lamina propria.

The transverse colon lamina propria is examined through biopsies collected during colonoscopy. Histopathological evaluation assesses the density and type of inflammatory cells, crypt architecture, and any dysplastic or neoplastic changes within the mucosal layer.
