glandular venous plexus

The glandular venous plexus is a venous network associated with the thyroid gland that connects the middle and superior thyroid veins, facilitating venous drainage of the thyroid region.

The glandular venous plexus is located on or near the surface of the thyroid gland in the anterior neck, forming connections between the middle thyroid veins and the superior thyroid veins.

The glandular venous plexus is involved in providing venous interconnections within the thyroid venous drainage system, helping to distribute venous outflow between the middle and superior thyroid veins.

Thyroid enlargement (goiter), thyroid tumors, hyperthyroidism, or surgical procedures on the thyroid gland may be associated with congestion or altered anatomy of the glandular venous plexus.

The glandular venous plexus may be assessed through neck ultrasound with Doppler imaging, CT or MRI of the neck, thyroid scintigraphy, or during thyroid surgery when venous anatomy is directly visualized.
