The epithelium conducts inspired air while beginning gas exchange and participates in mucociliary clearance.

The epithelium is continuous with the respiratory epithelium of alveolar ducts and the epithelium of terminal bronchioles.

Viral or bacterial infection causing bronchiolitis damages this epithelium, triggering inflammation and mucus production leading to airway obstruction.
