Dermal bone that first appears as paired ossifications in the membrane (dermis) dorsolateral to the ethmoid cartilage and anterolateral to the lateral ethmoids, later having the appearance of one butterfly-shaped element. Fused to the anterodorsal margin of the mesethmoid. Bordered anteriorly by the kinethmoid and posteriorly by the frontal.
