left distal ureter

The left distal ureter is the lower segment of the left ureter, extending from the common iliac artery bifurcation to the point where it enters the posterior wall of the urinary bladder. It represents the final portion of the left ureter's course before the intramural segment.

The left distal ureter is located in the left side of the pelvic cavity. After crossing the common iliac artery bifurcation, it curves along the lateral pelvic wall and then runs medially to connect with the posterolateral wall of the urinary bladder.

The left distal ureter carries urine from the mid-ureter into the bladder via peristaltic contractions. This segment navigates through the pelvis and is particularly relevant in pelvic surgery because of its proximity to pelvic organs and blood vessels.

The left distal ureter may be involved in conditions such as ureteral stones lodged at the ureterovesical junction, strictures, or injury during pelvic surgery. Clinical evaluation and imaging are necessary to assess any suspected pathology in this region.

The left distal ureter is commonly examined with CT urography, pelvic ultrasound, or intravenous pyelography. Ureteroscopy may also be used for direct visualization. These approaches help identify stones, strictures, or other abnormalities in this ureteral segment.
