hepatic portal venule

The hepatic portal venule is a small venous vessel that branches from the hepatic portal vein to deliver nutrient-rich blood from the gastrointestinal tract and spleen into the liver, where it is tributary of the hepatic sinusoids.

The hepatic portal venule is located within the portal tracts of the liver, running alongside branches of the hepatic artery and bile ducts as part of the portal triad structure.

The hepatic portal venule is involved in conveying nutrient-rich blood from the digestive organs to the hepatic sinusoids, where nutrients, toxins, and metabolic substrates may be processed by hepatocytes.

Portal hypertension, portal vein thrombosis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatic inflammation may be associated with alterations in flow and structure within the hepatic portal venules.

Hepatic portal venules may be assessed through liver biopsy with histological examination, Doppler ultrasound of the portal vasculature, or advanced imaging such as CT or MRI of the abdomen.
