abdominal segment bone

An abdominal segment bone (known in anatomical terminology as abdominal segment of trunk bone) is any bony element that is part of the abdominal segment of the trunk. These bones provide structural support to the abdominal region and serve as attachment points for muscles and other tissues.

Abdominal segment bones are found primarily in the posterior and inferior aspects of the abdomen. In humans, these include the lumbar vertebrae, the lower ribs, and the components of the pelvic girdle that border the abdominal segment.

Abdominal segment bones provide structural support and protection, serve as anchor points for the abdominal muscles, and form the bony framework within which the abdominal organs are housed. They transmit mechanical forces during movement and posture.

Lumbar vertebral fractures, osteoporosis of the lower vertebrae and pelvis, and rib fractures can all affect bones of the abdominal segment. These conditions may secondarily impact abdominal organ function or stability.

In humans, bones associated with the abdominal segment include the five lumbar vertebrae forming the posterior wall, the lower ribs forming part of the superior border, the sacrum, and the iliac portions of the pelvis forming the inferior boundary.
