It provides protection from injury and environmental exposure, though the thin underlying tissue offers limited cushioning compared to other leg regions.

It is innervated by branches of the saphenous nerve and superficial peroneal nerve, and supplied by the anterior tibial artery.

The anterior tibia is prone to laceration and poor wound healing due to minimal soft tissue coverage; it is a common site for pressure ulcers and fracture-related complications.
