mesial surface of tooth

The mesial surface of a tooth is the side of the tooth that faces toward the midline of the dental arch — that is, toward the front of the mouth. It is one of two interproximal surfaces that contact or face adjacent teeth, with the other being the distal surface.

The mesial surface is located on the side of each tooth that is oriented toward the center of the dental arch. For the upper and lower front teeth, this surface faces the midline of the face, while for back teeth it faces the front of the mouth.

The mesial surface is involved in maintaining contact with the adjacent tooth closer to the midline. This proximal contact helps stabilize teeth within the arch, distribute chewing forces, and prevent food impaction between teeth.

Interproximal dental caries are commonly associated with mesial surfaces, as this area is difficult to clean with a toothbrush alone. Plaque accumulation between teeth may also be associated with gum disease affecting the interdental papilla near this surface.

The mesial surface is assessed through bitewing or periapical radiographs, which are the most effective tools for detecting interproximal caries. Clinical probing may also be used to assess bone levels and pocket depth adjacent to the mesial surface.
