Given off at right angles from the arcuate arteries of the kidney on the side facing the cortex, the interlobular arteries pass directly outward between the medullary rays to reach the fibrous tunic, where they end in a capillary network. They are also called the cortical radiate or cortical radial arteries. A structural peculiarity distinguishes them: they do not anastomose with one another and are therefore end-arteries. Along their outward course they give off lateral branches that serve as the afferent vessels of the renal corpuscles, entering the capsule and ending in the glomerulus. From each glomerular tuft the efferent vessel emerges near the point where the afferent entered and breaks up into branches forming a dense plexus within Bowman's capsule.
