abdominal segment skin

Abdominal segment skin (known in anatomical terminology as abdominal segment of trunk skin) is the integument (outer skin) covering the abdominal segment of the trunk. It is continuous with the skin of adjacent body regions and consists of the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis (subcutaneous tissue).

Abdominal segment skin covers the external surface of the entire abdominal and pelvic trunk, extending from just below the lower ribs superiorly to the groin and perineum inferiorly, and wrapping around the lateral and posterior surfaces of the abdomen.

Like skin elsewhere, abdominal segment skin provides a protective barrier against pathogens, ultraviolet radiation, and mechanical injury. It also regulates temperature, senses the environment through touch and pain receptors, and contains specialized sensory innervation from the lower thoracic and lumbar nerves.

Herpes zoster (shingles) following dermatomal distributions, surgical wound complications, stretch marks (striae), skin infections, and inflammatory conditions such as eczema can affect the skin of the abdominal segment. Abdominal skin is also assessed clinically for signs of underlying organ disease such as jaundice or Cullen's sign.

Abdominal skin has a characteristic dermatomal innervation from T7 to L1 spinal levels, making it a clinically useful zone for assessing neurological function. The umbilicus is a distinctive anatomical landmark in the center of the abdominal skin surface.
