mesosalpinx-proximal muscular layer of fallopian tube

The mesosalpinx-proximal muscular layer of the fallopian tube is the region of the tubal muscularis positioned closest to the mesosalpinx — the fold of peritoneum that suspends the fallopian tube from the broad ligament. It is a specific anatomical subdivision of the smooth muscle layer of the fallopian tube wall.

This muscular layer is found in the wall of the fallopian tube on the mesentery-facing side, adjacent to the mesosalpinx. It lies in the proximal region nearest this attachment point and is surrounded by other smooth muscle layers and the tubal serosa.

This layer participates in the peristaltic and ciliary activity that propels ova and sperm through the fallopian tube. The muscularis as a whole generates rhythmic contractions, and regional variations in the mesosalpinx-proximal layer may contribute to the finely coordinated transport required for fertilization.

This muscular layer may be associated with inflammatory conditions such as salpingitis, which may cause fibrosis and functional impairment. Endometriosis affecting the broad ligament or mesosalpinx may also extend to involve this portion of the tubal wall.

Examination requires histological processing of fallopian tube tissue obtained surgically. The tissue is sectioned, stained, and analyzed microscopically to assess smooth muscle architecture, thickness, and pathological changes in each regional subdivision of the muscularis.
