antimesosalpinx-proximal fallopian tube epithelium

The antimesosalpinx-proximal fallopian tube epithelium is the region of the tubal epithelium located nearest to the antimesosalpinx — the free border of the fallopian tube opposite its mesenteric attachment. It is a specific positional subdivision of the simple columnar epithelium that lines the interior of the fallopian tube.

This epithelial region is located along the inner wall of the fallopian tube, on the side facing away from the mesosalpinx. It occupies the luminal surface of the tube in the portion closest to this free border and is found along the length of the fallopian tube within the broad ligament.

Like the tubal epithelium as a whole, this region participates in the transport of the ovum and sperm through the fallopian tube. Ciliated cells in the epithelium beat in coordinated waves toward the uterus, while secretory cells produce tubal fluid that nourishes and lubricates the gametes and early embryo.

This epithelial region may be associated with salpingitis, where infection and inflammation cause loss of ciliated cells and epithelial damage. Endometriosis and prior ectopic pregnancy may also be associated with structural changes in the tubal epithelium.

This epithelial region is examined histologically from sections of fallopian tube tissue obtained at surgery. The epithelium is evaluated for ciliated cell density, cellular integrity, inflammatory changes, and any evidence of epithelial atypia under light microscopy.
