anterior internal vertebral venous plexus

The anterior internal vertebral venous plexus is a network of veins located within the vertebral canal, positioned anterior to the spinal cord. It is part of the internal vertebral venous plexus system and receives blood from the basivertebral veins and internal vertebral veins, draining the vertebrae and spinal cord.

The anterior internal vertebral venous plexus lies within the vertebral canal, running along the posterior surface of the vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs, in front of the dura mater that surrounds the spinal cord. It extends the length of the vertebral column.

The anterior internal vertebral venous plexus drains blood from the vertebral bodies via the basivertebral veins and contributes to the venous drainage of the spinal cord and its surrounding structures. It connects with the posterior internal vertebral venous plexus and communicates with external vertebral venous plexuses through the intervertebral foramina.

The vertebral venous plexuses, including the anterior internal portion, are valveless and communicate broadly with body venous systems, which may be relevant in the context of certain pathological processes affecting the spine. Clinical evaluation is required to assess any specific condition.

The anterior internal vertebral venous plexus is typically evaluated with MRI or CT myelography in cases where spinal vascular abnormalities are suspected. Spinal angiography may be used when a vascular malformation is a consideration. These structures are also visualized during spinal surgery.
