accessory cuneate nucleus

ACu

The accessory cuneate nucleus is located lateral to the cuneate nucleus in the medulla oblongata at the level of the sensory decussation. It receives input from cervical spinal nerves and transmits that information to the cerebellum. These fibers are called cuneocerebellar fibers. In this function, the accessory cuneate nucleus is comparable to the upper extremity portion of the posterior spinocerebellar tract. [WP,unvetted].

よくある質問

What is the accessory cuneate nucleus?
The accessory cuneate nucleus (ACu) is a cluster of neurons in the medulla oblongata located lateral to the cuneate nucleus, at the level of the sensory decussation. It receives proprioceptive and tactile input from cervical spinal nerves and relays this information to the cerebellum via cuneocerebellar fibers.
Where is the accessory cuneate nucleus located?
The accessory cuneate nucleus is located in the caudal medulla oblongata, positioned laterally adjacent to the cuneate nucleus. It lies at the level of the sensory decussation in the dorsal medulla and is part of the dorsal column nuclei complex.
What is the function of the accessory cuneate nucleus?
The accessory cuneate nucleus processes proprioceptive signals (sense of position and movement) from the upper extremities and neck (cervical spinal levels), then transmits this information to the cerebellum via the cuneocerebellar tract. In this role, it is the upper limb equivalent of the posterior spinocerebellar tract nuclei for the lower limb.
What conditions can affect the accessory cuneate nucleus?
Lesions in the dorsomedial medulla oblongata affecting the accessory cuneate nucleus can impair proprioceptive input to the cerebellum from the upper limbs, potentially contributing to cerebellar ataxia or impaired upper limb coordination. Such lesions may result from vascular events (posterior inferior cerebellar artery territory strokes) or demyelinating disease.
How is the accessory cuneate nucleus different from the cuneate nucleus?
The cuneate nucleus processes fine touch and vibration sense from the upper limb and upper trunk and projects to the thalamus (medial lemniscal pathway for conscious sensation), while the accessory cuneate nucleus processes proprioception from cervical levels and projects to the cerebellum (for unconscious coordination). They serve different sensory modalities and different central targets.
