accessory cervical lymph node

The accessory cervical lymph node is a lymph node located in the accessory cervical region of the neck. Like all lymph nodes, it filters lymphatic fluid and houses immune cells that monitor for and respond to infection, cancer cells, and other foreign materials draining from its regional territory.

Accessory cervical lymph nodes are located in the posterior triangle of the neck, along the course of the accessory nerve (spinal accessory nerve, cranial nerve XI). They form part of the posterior cervical lymph node chain.

The accessory cervical lymph nodes filter lymph draining from the posterior scalp, neck, and shoulder region. They provide immune surveillance for their drainage territory, trapping and processing pathogens, cancer cells, and antigens that enter the lymphatic system from these areas.

Accessory cervical lymph nodes may become enlarged (lymphadenopathy) in response to upper respiratory infections, scalp infections, or skin conditions of the posterior head and neck. Metastatic spread of head and neck cancers — particularly those from the thyroid, nasopharynx, or skin — can involve these nodes.

Jugular chain nodes run along the internal jugular vein in the anterior and lateral neck and drain the deep structures of the head and neck, while accessory cervical nodes run along the accessory nerve in the posterior triangle and primarily drain the posterior scalp and neck. Both groups are assessed in the staging of head and neck cancers.
