gubernaculum (male or female)
caudal suspensory ligament
Beginning as undifferentiated mesenchyme attached to the caudal end of the gonads, the gubernaculum is a transient embryonic structure present only during the development of the urinary and reproductive organs, after which it is replaced by distinct vestiges in each sex. It is described as a genitoinguinal ligament: in the male it connects the fetal testis to the developing scrotum, and in the female it connects the ovary to the uterus. The same mesenchymal band therefore yields two different adult remnants depending on the course of gonadal development. Its Latin designation, the caudal suspensory ligament, records the attachment that defines it, and it is classified within the reproductive system as a mesoderm-derived structure with two subordinate entries for the male and female forms.
