ascending colon lamina propria

The ascending colon lamina propria is the connective tissue layer immediately beneath the epithelial lining of the ascending colon. It is part of the colonic mucosa on the right side of the abdomen and contains glands, immune cells, and vascular structures essential to mucosal health.

The ascending colon lamina propria is located within the wall of the ascending colon, which runs upward along the right side of the abdomen from the caecum to the hepatic flexure. It lies between the luminal epithelium and the muscularis mucosae, forming the connective tissue core of the mucosa.

The ascending colon lamina propria supports the crypts of Lieberkühn involved in absorbing water and electrolytes from chyme. It houses plasma cells, lymphocytes, and macrophages that contribute to immune surveillance at the mucosal surface and protect against bacterial translocation.

The ascending colon lamina propria may be associated with Crohn's disease, which often affects the ileocaecal region and ascending colon. Right-sided colorectal cancers and polyps may also originate in the mucosa of the ascending colon, involving the lamina propria.

The ascending colon lamina propria is examined through biopsy specimens taken during colonoscopy reaching the right colon. Pathological analysis of these samples assesses inflammatory cell density, crypt architecture, and any dysplastic or malignant features in the mucosal layer.
