The largest artery in the abdominal cavity, the abdominal aorta is the distal part of the descending aorta and a direct continuation of its thoracic portion. Its significance lies in the number of major branches it gives off along a short course: the inferior phrenic arteries, the lumbar arteries, the median sacral artery, the superior and inferior mesenteric arteries, the middle suprarenal arteries, the renal arteries, the testicular or ovarian arteries, and the celiac trunk. Between them these vessels supply the diaphragm, the posterior abdominal wall, the gut, the adrenal glands, the kidneys, and the gonads, so the abdominal segment of the aorta functions as the distribution point for most of the visceral arterial supply below the diaphragm.
