inferior esophageal nerve (sensu Cancer borealis)

The inferior esophageal nerve (ION) in Cancer borealis is one of the four nerves comprising the stomatogastric nerve (SGN). It is part of the stomatogastric nervous system and is involved in relaying signals between ganglionic centers and the foregut, contributing alongside the superior esophageal nerve and other components to the coordinated control of digestive structures.

In Cancer borealis, the inferior esophageal nerve runs along the lower portion of the esophagus and joins with the other nerves—including the superior esophageal nerve—to form the stomatogastric nerve. This nerve complex runs from the paired commissural ganglia to the stomatogastric ganglion on the dorsal surface of the foregut.

The inferior esophageal nerve is involved in transmitting signals as part of the stomatogastric nerve pathway. It contributes to the relay of motor and modulatory information between the commissural ganglia and stomatogastric ganglion, participating in the coordination of esophageal, gastric, and pyloric motor activity in Cancer borealis.

In experimental settings, selective manipulation of the inferior esophageal nerve or the stomatogastric nerve as a whole—such as transection, cooling, or pharmacological application—may be associated with changes in the modulatory input to the stomatogastric ganglion. These manipulations are used to study how descending input shapes central pattern generator activity.

The inferior esophageal nerve is studied using electrophysiological techniques applied to dissected stomatogastric nervous system preparations of Cancer borealis. Extracellular recordings can be made with suction electrodes placed on this nerve to monitor activity of motor and modulatory neurons. Anatomical characterization uses dye fills and immunohistochemistry with confocal microscopy.
