abductor digiti minimi of hand

abductor digiti minimi (hand)

The Abductor minimi digiti (Abductor digiti quinti) is situated on the ulnar border of the palm of the hand. It arises from the pisiform bone and from the tendon of the Flexor carpi ulnaris, and ends in a flat tendon, which divides into two slips; one is inserted into the ulnar side of the base of the first phalanx of the little finger; the other into the ulnar border of the aponeurosis of the Extensor digiti quinti proprius. In case of polydactyly it may insert to the sixth finger instead, if there is one.

Sıkça Sorulan Sorular

What is the abductor digiti minimi of the hand?
The abductor digiti minimi of the hand (abductor digiti minimi (hand)) is the intrinsic muscle of the hand located on the ulnar (little finger) border of the palm. It abducts (moves outward) the little finger and forms the prominent medial border of the hypothenar eminence.
Where is the abductor digiti minimi of the hand located?
This muscle lies along the ulnar border of the palm, from the pisiform bone to the base of the first phalanx and the extensor aponeurosis of the little finger. It forms the hypothenar eminence on the medial side of the palm.
What is the function of the abductor digiti minimi of the hand?
The abductor digiti minimi abducts the little finger, moving it away from the ring finger. This action is important for spreading the fingers and contributes to grip diversification and fine motor dexterity, particularly in precision hand tasks.
What conditions can affect the abductor digiti minimi of the hand?
This muscle is innervated by the ulnar nerve, so ulnar nerve compression (cubital tunnel syndrome or Guyon's canal syndrome) can weaken or paralyze it, resulting in the 'claw hand' deformity. Atrophy of the hypothenar eminence is a clinical sign of chronic ulnar nerve lesion.
How is the abductor digiti minimi of the hand different from the abductor pollicis brevis?
Both are intrinsic hand muscles that abduct their respective digits, but the abductor digiti minimi abducts the little finger and lies on the ulnar side of the palm (hypothenar), while the abductor pollicis brevis abducts the thumb and lies on the radial side (thenar). They are also innervated by different nerves.
